The bridge is a steel construction built between 1911 and 1913. It spans over the Kiel Canal and is used as a railway viaduct and in addition it carries an attached transported bridge for pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
German-wide there are only two, worldwide only eight ferries of this kind.
The combination of railway bridge and transporter bridge is worldwide unique.
The transporter bridge connects the community Osterrönfeld with the own of Rendsburg and transports per trip up to four vehicles and 60 pedestrians.

The bridge was built with around 350 workers, engineer Friedrich Voß was in charge, who also designed to other bridged over the Kiel Canal.
17.740 tons of steel with 3,2 millions of rivets were combined to form this bridge.
The cost for the construction were 13,4 million D-Mark.

The Rendsburger viaduct measures together with the two ramps 7,5 kilometres. The actual steel bridge construction has a length of 2.486 metres whereby the main bridge at a total length of 317 metres spans the canal in a clear height of 42 metres and a width between supports of 140 metres. The ramps are tight winding bends. In close proximity behind the northern ramp is Rendsburg's railway station.

Today the Rendsburger viaduct is the landmark of the town Rendsburg and one of the more important technical monuments in Germany.
