The distance to the county capital Kiel is roughly 25 kilometres, to the Danish border in the north nearly 60 kilometres.
The Eckernförder old town is being surrounded in the east by the Baltic Sea and in the west by Windebyer Noor.
And so beach, shopping streets, parks and inland lake are very close to each other.

The harbour with the sports boats and traditional sailing boats is situated at the northern edge of the city centre.

The city centre offers lots of points of interest like the museum in the old town hall, the St. Nicolai church at the Kirchplatz as well as the wooden flap bridge, called in short wood-bridge. It's unique in Schleswig–Holstein.
It was constructed after the great storm flood in 1872. It connected again the destroyed connection between the town districts Borby and present city centre.
The wood-bridge has been preserved in its features.
